Step-by-Step Guide to Clean Dirty Data Using Power Query Let’s break down the process of transforming messy data into clean, analysis-ready insights. 1. Import Data into Power Query Open Excel and go to the Data tab. Click on Get Data > From Workbook (or from your preferred data source). Select the sheet that contains your dirty data. Power Query Editor will open with a preview of your data. 2. Handle Missing or Null Values Look for empty cells or missing data. Use the Replace Values, Remove Rows, or Fill Down/Up features to fix them. Tip: Power Query lets you fill missing values using logic instead of doing it manually. 3. Remove Duplicates and Unwanted Columns Select the column(s) you want to check. Click Remove Duplicates to instantly eliminate redundant data. Remove unnecessary columns to keep your data clean and focused. 4. Split and Merge Columns Sometimes, names or data values are stored in a single column (e.g., “Ram Shrestha”). Use Split Column > By Delimiter to separate values like First Name and Last Name. Or use Merge Columns to combine data fields. 5. Load Clean Data Back to Excel Once your data is cleaned: Click Close & Load. Power Query will load your clean data into a new worksheet.
